LM Information Delivery into co-operation with Ebook Library

From April, LM Information Delivery will offer its customers a new kind of lending service for e-books. With the partnership LM Information Delivery is able to offer nearly 200,000 e-books from the world’s leading publishers. For libraries the service is ideal, because libraries pay only for books that are used. All e-books are integrated to LibNet® subscription management service of LM Information Delivery and libraries can start to use the service immediately.

Via the Ebook Library (EBL) database, libraries can acquire the electronic books from hundreds of leading academic publishers. Natural sciences, technology, medicine and economics are particularly strongly represented. In addition, the service also has publications from the fields of art, humanities and social sciences.

“We want to respond to our customers’ growing demand for e-books. EBL is a scientifically high level, and for libraries a cost-effective solution,” says LM Information Delivery’s CEO Janne Järvinen.

Libraries pay only for e-books that are used

The service is based on a new way of lending: a customer library receives a continuous right to access the database and also 325 lending rights per year to each work it selects. The user can review an e-book for 10 minutes before the lending time is activated.

The library’s customer usually receives a 24-hour reading right to the e-book, but the library can, if it wishes to set a longer lending period of its own. If all of an e-book’s 325 lending rights are not used during the year, they can be used for free during the next 12 months.

EBL e-books have less restrictions on use than competitive products, i.e. a book can be saved by several people on their own computer. The e-books are also easy to use: they can be downloaded via the internet to one’s own computer or to an e-book reading device.

Users can also, for five minutes, browse for free all of the database’s nearly 200,000 works, even if the library has not purchased a reading right to them.

Easy integration into present databases

The service is designed particularly for university, research institutes and company libraries. A library can acquire collections, single books or even parts of publications. The database can be fully integrated into libraries’ present ILS with MARC records, and cataloguing information can be incorporated into the customer’s system.

“The service also has a tool that facilitates libraries’ budgeting work; libraries can continually monitor their e-book selection and the number of reading rights used,” explains Järvinen.
